How to make a reed-weaving loom

Reed-weaving loom has been used since very early times in Cambodia to weave reed (KAK in Khmer language) for mats.

Mr. Khut Chork
Mr. Khut Chork was born in 1948 in Kandal Province’s Prek Taoung I village, Peam Oknhaoung commune, Lvea erm district. He married in 1976 during the Pol Pot regime and has been living in his birth village since 1980 with his wife, Sraing Thork, and their five children, three daughters and two sons.
At 18 years old, he started learning by himself how to make reed-weaving looms, by using existing looms and tools he collected from older loom makers. He soon started producing looms, as well as reed mats. He later concentrated on making looms only, which is his main job, which he supplements with other works as construction worker and carpenter.

Material and tools used to make a loom
Wood, Saw, Carpenter’s Plane, Sand paper, Hammer, Hand drill, Knife, Wood file, Ruler, Square, Hatchet, Metal nails, Bamboo strips.
Loom construction process

1. Getting all the wood needed
2. Planing the wood
3. Scratching the wood
4. Chiseling the wood with a hatchet
5. Grooving the board on all its length
6. Cutting the board into 10 cm long pieces
7. Measuring and pencil marking each piece of wood
8. Scratching each piece
9. Pencil marking and carving out two slots on each piece
10. Splitting each piece of wood
11. Sawing
12. Carving out slots and placing the piece on the frame’s notch
13. Lashing the joints together at right angles to each other
14. Drilling holes
15. Sharpening bamboo strips
16. Rounding the frame with a rounder
17. Trimming to even length
18. Polishing
19. Cutting bamboo strips
20. Sharpening the bamboo strips
21. Hollowing out each bamboo strip on one side
22. Placing the bamboo strips inside the frame and drilling holes for the nails
23. Pounding the nails
24. Measuring the midpoint on each bamboo piece with a banana leaf, and pencil marking
25. Drawing a line along the midpoints
26. Measuring the distance between the midpoints with a metal mail
27. Drilling each midpoint
28. Planning both sides of the bamboo strips
29. Polishing
The Future
Mr. Chork is now trying to teach his skills in loom making to his two sons, in the hope they will succeed him and perpetuate the legacy of his traditional craft.
He also welcomes anyone wanting to learn how to make such type of loom.
